Thingyan, originally comes from “Sanskrit” word ‘Thinkanta’ or ‘Sinkanta’, means “transition” or “changing over”. Thingyan Festival ushers in the Myanmar New Year usually occurs in mid-April. However, it is widely known as the “Myanmar Water Festival” due to its water-throwing activity on each other. It represents purification and the washing away of one’s sins and bad luck of the old year. It is actually Myanmar’s biggest and the most joyous festival which celebrated over a period of four to five days throughout the country. This year water festival will begin on April 13 and end on April 16, and followed by the New Year. Our neighboring countries like Laos and Thailand also celebrate the Songkran water festival, but Myanmar Thingyan is the wildest and most joyous water fight festival.
